Brownsville, located in east Brooklyn, has long been one of New York City's most dangerous neighborhoods. But in recent years, the area has undergone a transformation, thanks in part to a large-scale housing development project.
Over the last decade, 2,262 units in 4-unit buildings were built in Brownsville. Of these, 13 were market-rate units, while 85 were income-targeted. This influx of new housing has helped to stabilize the neighborhood and attract new residents.
Brownsville is still a relatively poor neighborhood, but the crime rate has declined significantly in recent years. In 2011, there were 24 murders in Brownsville, down from 44 in 2001.
The changing face of Brownsville is a testament to the power of community development. By investing in affordable housing and other neighborhood amenities, it is possible to revitalize even the most troubled areas.
